老北京食堂 (Lao Beijing) is one of the F&B branding carried by the 同乐 Group which we visited on 21 May 2014 @ Plaza Singapura for dinner. It has an oriental themed decoration which makes it cosy and certainly a great time for families & friends to gather for a hearty-meal. They have 3 respective outlets located at:
- Plaza Singapura #03-01
- Velocity @ Novena Square #02-11/12 &
- Orchard Central (currently under refurnishment till end of May 2014).
老北京食堂 serves authentic Northern Chinese cuisines and some of their house specialties includes:
- Crispy Skin Roast Duck 老北京明炉烤鸭
- Beijing-style Sweet and Sour Fish 东兴楼的松鼠鱼
- Steamed Juicy Meat Buns 小笼汤包
- Pan-fried Onion Pancake 葱油饼
- Beijing-style Special Zhajiang Noodles 老北京炸酱面
- Popiah 薄饼
Since the last time we visited them was almost a year ago, I can hardly remember what I ordered then. So we decided to go ahead and order what looks tempting on the menu to satisfy 3 hungry stomaches.
1. Golden Scallop
The scallop was deep-fried and then stir-fry with salted egg to give its a different flavour to the overall taste. It was highly recommended by the manager so we ordered 2 sets. Upon serving, the manager was saying to eat it with the lettuce so that it would not be too greasy. Personally, I find it way too oily and the lettuce did not help much in easing the greasiness in my palate. I guess the deep frying / stir- frying process somehow met with some mishaps. So it was a disappointment and not worth the price (SGD$8.00/ scallop) I paid.
2. Soft Bone Noodle 软骨面
The braised soft bone was tender and flavourful. My husband was enjoying it with his bowl of plain rice while my daughter enjoyed the noodle. It would be nice if they can include the Braised Soft Bone as a standalone dish in their menu.
3. Claypot Brinjal
It is easy to overcook brinjal but the chef did a great job in cooking it till perfection. I enjoyed the blasting flavours of mildly sweet, mildly salty, savoury & a kick of spiciness in one simple clayot brinjal. This is a dish that goes so well with a bowl of rice that the husband actually ate 2 bowls of plain rice alongside all these tasty dishes.
4. 宫保鸡丁 Gong Bao Chicken
It is competitive in the F&B industry in Singapore. We find many chefs trying to recreate the flavours of common dishes, including this 宫保鸡丁 which we ordered. They replaced the cashew nuts with peanuts which does not complement the dish. It is good to be different & innovative but jigsaw puzzle needs to fit one another to make it complete. What I like about 宫保鸡丁is the twitch of spiciness which comes & goes within the palate (because of the dried chilli). Unfortunately, it was lacking in this dish as it was just sweetness & savoury.
As I mentioned in many of my previous posts, every restaurant has its signature dishes & chilli sauce. The chilli sauce served at老北京食堂 is good!! It goes well with anything that is dipped into it. So thanks to it complementing all the other dishes which lack the necessary flavours.
Guess that’s all to share at 老北京食堂 for now. Hope to return soon despite the not-so-satisfying dinner for more of the other items on the menu.
